Places You Will Visit on This 4 Days Ndutu Migration Safari

Arusha City – Gateway to Northern Tanzania Safari

Arusha City is the main starting point for many northern Tanzania safaris. The city is located near Mount Meru and gives easy access to Tarangire, Ndutu, Serengeti, Ngorongoro Crater, Lake Manyara, and other famous safari destinations.

Most travelers spend a night in Arusha before the safari starts. This makes the journey easier and gives you time to relax, prepare, and meet your safari team before the adventure begins.

Tarangire National Park – Elephants, Baobab Trees and Wild Savannah

Tarangire National Park is one of the best places in Tanzania to see large elephant herds. The park is also famous for ancient baobab trees, open landscapes, river valleys, and peaceful wildlife viewing.

During your game drive, you may see elephants, lions, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest, buffaloes, impalas, warthogs, ostriches, baboons, and many different birds. The Tarangire River is an important water source and attracts many animals during the dry season.

Tarangire gives this safari a strong wildlife beginning with beautiful savannah views, elephant families, baobab trees, and a relaxed African safari feeling.

Ndutu Area – Southern Serengeti Migration Plains

The Ndutu area is located between the southern Serengeti and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area. It is one of the best places to experience the Great Wildebeest Migration during the calving season, especially when large herds gather on the short grass plains.

During the migration season, Ndutu is known for wildebeest, zebras, gazelles, lions, cheetahs, hyenas, jackals, elephants, giraffes, and many bird species. The open plains and seasonal lakes create excellent conditions for wildlife viewing and photography.

Ndutu is especially rewarding for travelers who want to see big cats and migration action in a more focused safari route.

Ngorongoro Highlands – Scenic Overnight Before the Crater

The Ngorongoro Highlands are known for cool weather, green hills, farms, forests, Maasai villages, and beautiful views. Spending a night here gives you a good position for an early descent into Ngorongoro Crater the next morning.

Ngorongoro Crater – Tanzania’s Natural Wildlife Wonder

Ngorongoro Crater is one of the most famous wildlife destinations in Tanzania. It was formed millions of years ago after a large volcano collapsed, creating a huge natural caldera filled with animals.

The crater floor has grassland, forest, swamp, lake areas, and open plains. This makes it home to many animals throughout the year, including lions, elephants, buffaloes, zebras, wildebeest, hippos, hyenas, gazelles, and the rare black rhino.

Because many animals live inside the crater, Ngorongoro gives visitors one of the best chances to see a lot of wildlife in a short time.

Arusha to Tarangire

Pick up at 7:30 AM from your hotel in Arusha and depart for Tarangire National Park with a picnic lunch for a full day game drive. Tanzania’s third largest National park is known for its majestic baobab trees that dot the landscape, dwarfing the animals that feed beneath them. The Tarangire River is the centerpiece of this park which is famous for some of the largest herds of elephants in Africa. Here you may see lion, leopard, cheetah, lesser kudu, buffalo, Oryx, eland, giraffe and zebra. Post the game drive, you will head back to your camp/lodge where a delicious dinner awaits you.

We start around 7:00 AM and head towards the Ndutu region. The drive to Ndutu is about 4 hours from Tarangire or about 2.5 hours from Karatu. Once you reach Ndutu you will begin game drives with a convenient stop for your picnic lunch. Sweeping grasslands cover the region which gradually fade into the Serengeti. Ndutu forms a part of the route for the annual migration of more than 2 million wildebeests and thousands of zebra, antelope and gazelle through the Serengeti eco system. During game drives between December and April, you will be able to see the great migration in this region. Between Mid Jan and Feb, calving happens here and it attracts hordes of predators prying on vulnerable young wildebeest. Crested with Lake Ndutu and Lake Masek, these waterholes offer plenty of wildlife game during the dry season. The Ndutu is also the home ground for 6 species of big cats – leopard, lion, cheetah, caracal, serval and wildcat. The action-packed game drive will end late in the evening by around 6PM. You will now head towards your choice of accommodation, where a freshly prepared dinner awaits you. Ensure you get some good rest and recharge yourself for another eventful day.

Day

3

Ndutu to Ngorongoro/Karatu

Today you get another chance to view the beautiful wildlife spectacle at Ndutu. We start early in the day and after breakfast, depart for game drives around 6:20 AM with packed lunch. Day

4

Ngorongoro Crater Tour (5 Hours) to Arusha

On the last day of your safari, you will have an early start. Finishing up with a quick breakfast you will head to Ngorongoro crater. The Ngorongoro Crater is the world’s largest inactive, intact and unfilled volcanic caldera. It has a massive floor of about 260 sq kms with a depth of over 2000 feet. The 5-hour game drive on the crater floor will show you a lot of animal action. Keeping the camera ready is definitely recommended. The African elephant, buffalo, Black rhino, Hippos, Hyenas, Cheetahs and Lions are found in plenty. Post the picnic lunch at the beautiful Hippo pool, you will begin a steep ascend to the top exit of the crater. This is the last leg of your safari, with a 4hr drive left to Arusha. WILDLIFE YOU CAN SEE

Wildlife You Can See on This 4-Day Ndutu Migration Safari

The Ndutu area offers an exceptional wildlife experience, especially during the Great Migration season. Combined with Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, this safari gives you opportunities to see large herds, predators, elephants and many other animals across very different Northern Tanzania landscapes.

01

Wildebeest

Wildebeest are one of the main highlights of the Ndutu Migration experience. During the appropriate migration period, large herds can gather across the open plains as they move through the wider Serengeti ecosystem.

02

Zebras

Zebra often travel alongside wildebeest during the migration. Their distinctive patterns make them a favourite sight for photographers while adding to the variety of wildlife found across the Ndutu plains.

03

Lions

Lions are among the predators you may encounter while exploring the Ndutu area. The concentration of migrating herbivores can create excellent opportunities for observing predator activity in the surrounding grasslands.

04

Cheetahs

Cheetahs can also be seen across the open plains. Their hunting style and preference for open habitats make the Ndutu landscape an interesting environment for wildlife observation.

05

Elephants

Elephants can be encountered during the safari, particularly around suitable habitats and water sources. Tarangire adds another strong elephant viewing opportunity to this 4-day itinerary.

06

Black Rhinoceros

Ngorongoro Crater provides an opportunity to look for black rhinoceros among its diverse wildlife. Sightings are never guaranteed, but the crater is recognised as one of Tanzania's important wildlife-viewing areas.

07

Hippos

Hippos may be observed around suitable water habitats, including areas within the Ngorongoro Crater. Their presence adds another interesting dimension to the wildlife experience.

08

Giraffes

Giraffes may be encountered during game drives in suitable areas of the safari route. Their height and graceful movement make them one of the most memorable animals to photograph in Tanzania.

+

The Ndutu Migration Wildlife Experience

The biggest attraction of this itinerary is the opportunity to experience the Great Migration ecosystem around Ndutu during the appropriate seasonal period. The exact location and movement of wildlife naturally change throughout the year, so sightings depend on current animal movements, weather and local conditions. Tanzania Tourism identifies the Serengeti and its Great Migration as one of the country's signature wildlife experiences.

WILDLIFE HIGHLIGHTS

Experience the wider Serengeti migration ecosystem around Ndutu during the relevant seasonal period.

Combine the Great Migration experience with Tarangire's wildlife and the spectacular landscapes of the Ngorongoro Crater on one carefully planned 4-day Tanzania safari.

NDUTU GREAT MIGRATION EXPERIENCE

Ndutu Great Migration Experience in Tanzania

Experience one of Tanzania's most remarkable wildlife spectacles in the Ndutu area, where the wider Serengeti ecosystem becomes especially significant during the seasonal movement of wildebeest and zebra. Combined with Tarangire National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater, this 4-day safari brings together migration, predators, landscapes and exceptional wildlife viewing.

01

Follow the Migration Season

During the appropriate migration period, the Ndutu landscape can become an important area for large concentrations of wildebeest and zebra. Wildlife movements change naturally, so your guide will monitor local conditions when planning game drives.

02

Wildebeest Calving Season

One of the most remarkable periods in the southern Serengeti ecosystem is the calving season, when large numbers of wildebeest give birth across the plains. This seasonal concentration can also attract predators and create memorable wildlife encounters.

03

Predator Encounters

Where large numbers of herbivores gather, predators may also be active. During suitable conditions, game drives around Ndutu can provide opportunities to look for lions, cheetahs, hyenas and other predators.

04

Open Ndutu Plains

The open landscapes around Ndutu create excellent conditions for wildlife observation and photography. Wide views across the plains allow you to appreciate the scale of the Serengeti ecosystem and its seasonal wildlife movements.

+

Why Is Ndutu Special During the Migration?

Ndutu is particularly attractive during the period when migrating herds concentrate in the southern Serengeti ecosystem. The combination of abundant herbivores, open plains and predator activity makes this part of Tanzania especially interesting for travellers seeking a migration focused safari.

THE MIGRATION EXPERIENCE

What You May Experience Around Ndutu

Large Herds

Seasonal concentrations of wildebeest and zebra may create spectacular wildlife-viewing opportunities.

Calving

During calving season, the plains can become an important nursery area for young wildebeest.

Predators

Lions, cheetahs, hyenas and other predators may be active around areas with abundant prey.

Photography

Wide open landscapes and wildlife activity provide excellent opportunities for safari photography.

MORE THAN THE MIGRATION

Tarangire, Ndutu & Ngorongoro in One Safari

Tarangire National Park

Begin your safari with the landscapes and wildlife of Tarangire, known for its elephants, baobab trees and diverse savannah habitats.

Ndutu Migration Area

Focus on the seasonal migration experience and explore the plains where wildlife movements can be especially impressive during the relevant period.

Ngorongoro Crater

Finish with a game drive in the Ngorongoro Crater, offering a different wildlife environment and the opportunity to see a wide variety of species in a compact natural setting.

!

The Migration Does Not Follow an Exact Schedule

The Great Migration is a natural phenomenon and wildlife movements depend on rainfall, food availability and other environmental conditions. For this reason, the exact location and concentration of animals can vary from one year to another and from one week to another. Your safari dates should therefore be planned around the expected seasonal pattern rather than a guaranteed animal location.

Make the Ndutu Migration Part of Your Tanzania Adventure

Combine the seasonal migration experience with Tarangire wildlife and the Ngorongoro Crater on a carefully planned 4-day Tanzania safari.

Ndutu Migration Safari: Great Migration & Calving Season Calendar

SOUTHERN SERENGETI

Why January to March Is Popular for Ndutu Safaris

The early months of the year are particularly attractive to travelers interested in the wildebeest calving season. Large herds may gather in the southern Serengeti ecosystem, creating opportunities for wildlife viewing and predator encounters. February is often a particularly popular month, but actual conditions can vary each year.

UNDERSTANDING THE MIGRATION

The Great Migration Is a Continuous Natural Cycle

Calving

Southern Serengeti and Ndutu become important areas during the calving period.

Grazing

Herds move in search of fresh grass and water as seasonal conditions change.

Migration

Animals gradually travel through different Serengeti ecosystems during the year.

Return

Seasonal rains can encourage herds to move back toward the southern plains.

!

Migration Dates Are Estimates, Not Guarantees

The Great Migration does not follow a fixed timetable. Rainfall, grass availability, water sources and other natural conditions influence where the herds move. The monthly calendar is therefore a planning guide rather than a guarantee of where wildlife will be on a particular date.
